"Red and green quilt collection of Anita Shackelford "
Anita Shackelford’s collection of mid-nineteenth century red and green quilts included some rare or one of a kind designs. Many were in pristine condition; others show characteristic changes in the fabrics of that period. Participants enjoyed a walk through the exhibit and were able to hear a little bit about the provenance and design style of each one.
Anita’s quilts have been exhibited in shows across the United States, in Australia and Japan, winning many awards, including twelve Best of Show and many for workmanship. Two quilts have received the Mary Krickbaum Award for best hand quilting at a National Quilting Association show. Her quilts have been published in American Quilter, American Patchwork & Quilting, Better Homes & Gardens’ Fashion Ideas, Love of Quilting, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilting Today, Quilting International, Quilt Craft, Traditional Quilter, Patchwork Quilt Tsushin, Americana Magazine, Award Winning Quilts and Their Makers Vol. I, The Quilt: Beauty in Fabric and Thread, Rodale’s Successful Quilting Library, and Great American Quilts, 2001.
Anita Shackelford has been a quiltmaker since 1967 and began teaching in 1980. She is an internationally recognized teacher and lecturer who loves combining appliqué and fine hand quilting to create new quilts in 19th century style. She also enjoys using her sewing machine for many parts of the creative process and has recently added longarm quilting to the mix.
Anita is the author of Three Dimensional Appliqué and Embroidery Embellishment: Techniques For Today's Album Quilt, Anita Shackelford: Surface Textures, Appliqué with Folded Cutwork, Coxcomb Variations, Infinite Feathers, and A Modern Mix, all published by American Quilter's Society. Books and quilting tools marketed under her own business name, Thimble Works, include Ohio Collection, Pennsylvania Plain & Fancy, RucheMark ruching guides, Berries, Grapes & Tendrils, and the Infinite Feathers Design Template. Her work and antique quilts from her collection have been featured in several gallery and museum exhibits.
Quilt Study of Mid-19th Century Red and Green Quilts
Over forty entries in AQSG’s 2008 Quilt Study of Mid-19th Century Red and Green Quilts were on display. The purpose of the Quilt Study was for members to replicate, either exactly, or as an interpretation, a quilt of a particular style or period. In this way, members learned from the textile the history, techniques, and perhaps something of the person who made the original. Interest in the study continues to grow as more members participate every study.
During seminar the IQSC Exhibition Review Committee selected 25 quilts to be displayed at The International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, NE, and these 25 quilts will continue to tour. Venues to be included in this cycle’s tour include the Quilters Hall of Fame and the San Diego Quilt Show.
The Studies began in 2000 with chintz quilts, which were displayed at Seminar in Lincoln, NE. It has continued biennially with crib quilts in 2002, two-color quilts in 2004, and pre-1840 bedcoverings 2006. Bobbi Finley and Penny Tucker coordinate the Quilt Studies.
