Amish Country Tour

Holmes County, Ohio is home to the largest Behalt Amish community in our country.  The tour immersed us in Amish and Mennonite history and took us through the rolling countryside to an Amish home for lunch.  Our hostess, a quilter with old order Amish and Mennonite heritage, showed her family quilts and spoke on Amish traditions. A walking tour of Kidron included the Sonneburg Heritage Center, Lehman's Hardware, and /or Hearthside Quilt Shop.  The Wayne County Historical Society quilt collection in Wooster, Ohio was the last stop before returning to the hotel.

Quilts of the Midwest:  Creations of Art and Utility

Group

The tour took us to 5 of the 9 exhibits in “Quilts of the Midwest: Creations of Art and Utility” - the Martin de Porres Center, the Cultural Arts Center, the Ohio Historical Society, and the Snowden Gallery on the campus of the Ohio State University, the Ross Art Museum on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.  Along the way a guide narrated the history of the largest privately owned restored historic area in the country, German Village, where we enjoyed a meal provided at Schmidt's, a German restaurant.

Nancy Crow Barn and Studio and the Dairy Barn Art Center

NC & HB

The opportunity to visit with Nancy Crow in her studio and a tour of the teaching barn on her farm in Baltimore, Ohio was a rare treat. From Baltimore the tour goes to Athens, Ohio to the renowned Dairy Barn Art Center, home of Quilt National. Here the private collection of the late Hilary Fletcher was shown. Hilary was the Director of Quilt National for many years and collected art quilts. Dinner was at Shade on the Canal in Canal Winchester, an Ohio canal town once so vital to the development of the Midwest.
