Quilt History in Old Periodicals

By: Wilene Smith

Grandfather’s Clock, Wild Pigeon, and Wheel of Society are just three of the recently discovered designs found in two early 20th century periodicals previously unknown as sources for quilt patterns. Hearth and Home magazine has long been recognized as a major source for quilt designs but recent discoveries have revealed four “sister” publications. Combined, these five magazines become a veritable 40-year diary of quiltmaking in the United States and Canada.

A Profile of Quilts and Donors at the DAR Museum

By: Nancy Gibson Tuckhorn

This research is Part I of a two-part survey based on the quilts and their donors at the DAR museum. It coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum. I compiled this data from the DAR Museum’s automated collections management system.
The Quilt Collection at the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum consists of 225 quilts. They are divided into nine primary categories.

The Marketing of Anne Orr’s Quilts

By: Merikay Waldvogel

Anne Orr quilts are simply spectacular in their visual impact. Whether on a bed or hung on a museum wall, Orr quilts continue to thrill viewers. The balanced designs and the carefully selected colors make each quilt a stunning masterpiece. Anne Orr’s decision to include traditional decorative elements such as appliqué and cross-stitch style flowers in quilts meant that her quilts found a niche in sophisticated decorating schemes.

Emma Andres and Her Six Grand Old Characters

By: Laurene Sinema and Janet Carruth

During the period 1930 – 1950 several male quiltmakers were receiving ribbons and awards for their quilts. The subsequent nationwide publicity brought them to the attention of Emma M. Andres, a quiltmaker in Prescott, Arizona. Correspondence with them sparked Emma’s innate creativity and some 15 original prize-winning quilts were born. For several years before Emma’s death we were personal friends and were intrigued by her memories of these men and her extensive scrapbook collection of letters,

Contemporary Quiltmaking in Maine: Re-fashioning Femininity

By: Kristen M. Langellier

Although the recent renaissance in quiltmaking is widely acknowledged, few empirical studies systematically document this culture. In summer 1989 I conducted a survey of the ten-year old Pine Tree Quilters Guild of Maine, collecting data on individual quilting histories, current quilting practices, participation in quilting groups, and demographics of the quilters. Survey results (468 respondents) reveal a complex profile of the “Maine quilter” and of how and why she quilts.

The Multicolored Geometric Pieced Sails of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago

By: Joyce B. Peaden

Distinctive geometric sails of dyed cloth are pieced by the Muslim people of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, the southernmost part of the Philippine Islands. The sails are used on double outrigger boats, which are called vintas. This article considers the subject in the following areas: (1) the nature of the sails, (2) the double outrigger boats, (3) commentary on the facts and the legends relating to the origin of these seafaring people,

Quilt Patterns and Contests of the Omaha World Herald, 1921-1941

By: Jan Stehlik

In a study of the Omaha World Herald, Omaha, Nebraska, a daily newspaper, 1920-1940, I found that the newspaper published nineteen quilt pattern series and sponsored ten contests with quilt shows in which one of the categories for the show features a previous pattern series.

From 1921-1934 the series patterns were designed by Ruby McKim and are not exclusive with the World Herald. In 1937 and 1938 the patterns were designed by the World Herald’s own Home Economics Editor,

Quilts as Material History: Identifying Research Models

By: Elizabeth Richards, Sherri Martin-Scott, and Kerry Maguire

Material culture studies physical objects as an indication of human behavior. Quilts are part of this special group of every day artifacts created by a variety of people in many different geographic locations and cultures. The lives of the creators are reflected through their history, material, construction, design, function and value of the quilts. Research on quilting is relatively new area of study: most of the work has been done within the last decade or two.

Pre-1940 Quilt Tops: Their Status and Fate in Western New York State

By: Barbara K. Phillippi

At 9 “ Quilt Days in 7 locations in Western New York State sponsored by the museum of American Folk Art, 1/8 of the pre-1940 quilts presented were unfinished tops. To determine the status and fate of unfinished tops in the area, I placed ads in two local papers, mailed 100 questionnaires, and conducted personal and phone interviews with the 48 respondents. These included quilt top owners,
